Water Quality and Conservation Division

The Water Conservation and Quality division is one of the technical divisions within department of Water Affairs.  It is primarily charged with coordinating and facilitating water conservation, protection and quality issues for the 17 major village water supplies.  However, its mandate is extended to other villages throughout the country. It is increasingly becoming evident that additional planning tools and water conservation and protection measures are needed in the quest to safeguard and utilize the scarce water resources in the most beneficial and optimal ways. The continuous water and waste water quality monitoring of our water resources thus proves to be a necessity, coupled by introduction of various technologies to effectively implement the water conservation and protection measures and practices countrywide. The following initiatives have been undertaken by the division in year 2005-2006.

Policy Issues

The Government of Botswana is determined to create an enabling environment necessary framework to facilitate the expected outputs of the division. Implementation of the recommendations of the recently completed project on ‘Water Conservation and Water Demand Management in Botswana’ is being undertaken and still continues.  Some of these include the drafting of the National Water Conservation Policy and its related Strategy.  Wide stakeholder and public consultation has commenced and will continue in year 2007 to cover all districts and sub-districts in Botswana.  This Policy is an integral part of the implementation of the reviewed Botswana National Water Master Plan (BNWMP) and the National Development Plan 9 (NDP 9) and is a roadmap to better manage water resources in the country. In addition to this, the division has also drafted ‘Regulations for the supply of drinking water in Botswana,’ a document designed to mitigate misuse, wastage and mismanagement of drinking water supply in Botswana.  The division also developed and adopted new standards for water installation in buildings (BOS…).
